Reliable and rapid mutagenicity and cytotoxicity testing of complex samples

Analyzing both known and unknown mutagens is difficult in complex samples. Unknown mutagens are currently overlooked. Existing mutagenicity tests are hampered by matrix interference, diffusion effects, solubility/solidification issues, a single toxicological endpoint, long durations, and the associated high analytical costs. Here, an improved method for mutagenicity and cytotoxicity testing is presented, which can reliably assess 2 or 3 endpoints (mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, human S9 metabolism) simultaneously, can be performed significantly faster and more cost-effectively, and is particularly suitable for complex sample mixtures such as cosmetics, personal care products, but also, for example, food samples, plastics, animal feed, meat substitutes, and dyes.
